The strenght of hope

“Kyiv” is a time of reflection and hope for many in Ukraine, a nation today marked by the conflict with Russia.

Driven by the emotional invitation of a colleague, I spent 11 days in Ukraine a country I had never visited before.  My goal was to witness with my own eyes the effects of the war on the cities and on the faces of the people who live through this conflict every day.
I did not know what to expect upon arriving in Kyiv. The fear was strong, but equally strong was my desire to get closer and truly understand the reality of this nation.

Ukraine, brought to its knees, with Russian power and force destroying and killing innocent lives, is still alive. Despite the palpable fear in the streets of the capital, I immediately sensed that there is a feeling of home and resilience in this country that cannot be broken.
My arrival in Kyiv was marked by an atmosphere of tension, but also by an extraordinary display of national unity.
The streets of Kyiv were filled with citizens determined to carry on with their daily lives with dignity and courage. Despite the sirens echoing at regular intervals, the metro stations used as shelters, and the visible presence of armed forces, people continued to move forward with determination, refusing to be overcome by fear.
We felt observed unexpected visitors, almost like out-of-place tourists.
People were curious about our presence, about the fact that we were there at that moment.
After a few days, the fear I initially felt had faded. I felt that I needed to be here, in this country, to tell its story and to listen to the voices of those who, with courage, determination and pride, continue to fight and imagine a new future.

Here, I heard stories of families forced to leave their homes, yet who had not lost the will to fight for the freedom and safety of their children. Solidarity among people was evident.
Those who had lost everything found comfort and support in those who, despite having little, were still willing to share.
A particularly moving moment was meeting a soldier in civilian clothes in Irpin, mourning the loss of his family during the Russian occupation in March 2022.
Speaking with them, I sensed a deep responsibility not only toward their homeland, but also toward future generations “We are fighting for our children’s freedom, ”a father of two told me“ We cannot allow the war to take away their dreams, so they can grow up in a free and sovereign country.”
Despite the daily hardships and the uncertainty of the future, what struck me most was the resilience of the Ukrainian people.
Their hope is not simply a vague aspiration, but a concrete force that guides their actions and sustains their resistance.
Ukraine showed me a people who, despite adversity, have never lost their humanity or determination.
The hope I saw in the eyes of those living in this country their unwavering will to fight for freedom and for the future of their children is a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit.

In a time of great hardship, Ukrainians continue to fight not only for their land, but for an idea of freedom that inspires and moves deeply.
